Projects and Activities
Our current initiatives for 2010:
- Expand our database of non-traditional actuaries by identifying and speaking with actuaries in the non-traditional arena in order to capture their stories. We plan to share these stories in future newsletters.
- Monitor actuarial employment trends and identify non-traditional opportunities for actuaries.
- Contribute to event and session planning for SOA meetings, including the Health Spring Meeting, Life and Annuity Symposium and Annual Meeting.
- Sponsor at least two webcasts. If you have topic suggestions or would like to volunteer please contact us.
- Produce bi-annual newsletters capturing the most interesting, up-to-date, and relevant topics about the changes and trends in the actuarial profession.
- Support the activities of the Younger Actuary Network (mentorship program, webcasts, networking events, and more!)
- Support the activities of the Personal Actuary Network (In Progress–Financial Advice to the Middle and Lower Income Markets–Phase I)
- Expand our membership and volunteer base. The Actuary of the Future relies on volunteers. If you're interested in volunteering, please fill out the volunteer form or contact a section council member. If you're interested in joining our section, more information on the benefits of joining our section can be found under the Prospective Members section of our website.
If you'd like additional information on any of the above items, please contact the appropriate section council members assigned to these initiatives. They can be found in the following file.
We feel that the best way to keep you up-to-date on the latest happenings is through our website. Please check back frequently. If there is something specific that you think would be relevant to our members for posting on the site, please contact Janine Bender at janine.bender@towerswatson.com.

The Eighth Speculative Fiction Contest
Our Initiatives for 2009:
- Support the research work of the Project Oversight Group under the Pension
Section, which has been charged by the Issues Advisory Council of the SOA with
researching the market potential for personal actuaries in the retirement area.
This is an important initial step in determining the direction the Board of
Governors may take in providing support for personal actuarial work (similar to
the ERM initiative).
- Identify actuaries performing personal actuarial work.
- Continue sponsorship of sessions at SOA meetings and articles for SOA
publications, especially highlighting real examples of personal actuaries in
action.
- Explore possible synergies with initiatives of other sections such as the Entrepreneurial Actuaries
Section on business models for success and the Joint Risk Management Section for
parallels between Enterprise Risk Management and Personal Risk Management.
- Spearhead a "Financial Advice to the Middle and Lower Income Markets–Phase I" Request for Proposals to address advice issues pertaining to persons of moderate and low wealth. In Phase I, the primary object is to examine why it appears that appropriate financial advice is generally not available to this segment of the American public. For Phase II, the goal is to use what is learned from Phase I and explore alternative ways for providing such advice.
